I did not understand what the Rosenblum method was prior to this assignment, but now I do.
This practice assignment was a good learning experience and I now feel more confident for the upcoming major video assignment.
After everything that we have covered in this Digital Journalism class so far, and our critiques of news stories, I would have done something differently for my practice video assignment. For this assignment, I had to conduct an interview and record five different sequences using the Rosenblum method. When I was doing this assignment, I didn’t have the full understanding of the Rosenblum method as I thought I did.
The Rosenblum method consists of 5 shots: a closeup of the hands, a closeup of the face, a wide shot, an over-the-shoulder shot, and an unusual shot. When I was shooting video for this practice assignment, my understanding of the method was that it was specifically about shooting action, getting a few wide shots, a few medium shots, and a few closeups to tell the story.
I had decided to “tell the story” of my boyfriend taking his dog outside. I got one over the shoulder shot in addition to the wide, medium, and closeup shots I thought I was supposed to do. I had a medium close up of my boyfriend putting the leash on his dog, a few closeups of the dog running around outside, some wide shots of my boyfriend walking with the dog, a couple medium shots for the interview portion, a medium shot of my boyfriend giving his dog a treat after the walk, and one over-the-shoulder shot of him petting the dog at the end.
Although I will say that the sequencing I had was good, I do see how I misunderstood the types of shots I needed for the assignment. I can now say that I have a better understanding of what the Rosenblum method is for shooting video. The video practice was a great learning experience for the upcoming major video assignment.
