What you need to know:
Digital media has had a profound impact on the field of journalism.
Journalism is constantly evolving, especially with all the new technologies in today’s society.
Journalism is now more interactive, engaging, and informative than ever before.
Audiences play a major role in journalism, both as receivers and contributors.
Journalism will only continue to evolve.
I think that, because of the rise of digital media, journalism is changing entirely. Today, we live in a world that is almost entirely dependent on digital tools to perform daily tasks and provide us with entertainment and connection. Because of this, journalism is no longer just newspapers and TV or radio broadcasts.
Jecinta Mwangi, a communications specialist and social media manager, says “The future of journalism is intertwined with technology, transforming not only how news is consumed but also how it is produced” (Mwangi).
Journalism is evolving; it now includes websites, blogs, podcasts, webinars videos, photos, infographics, and even social media.
According to Odell Dias from the St Pauls Institute of Communication Education, “Digital journalism is a rapidly evolving field that is changing the way news and information is produced and distributed. With the advent of new technologies, digital journalism is becoming more interactive, engaging, and informative” (Dias).
In today’s society, almost everyone has access to some form of digital technology, which allows journalists to have a much broader reach than was previously possible. The audiences can participate in the process of gathering information, and they can also contribute to journalism by putting their own thoughts, videos, and photos on any topic on the internet.
One very interesting way that journalism is changing is in the possibility of real-time reporting. Social media gives journalists the ability to send out updates as soon as something happens. Live streaming is another way to report in real-time, allowing journalists to share a story while it is occurring. This is an entirely new ability in the field of journalism that may continue to shape the way stories are told.
With all the changes, I hope that journalists will still adhere to the morals that have always been honored in the field.
An article from St. Bonaventure University states that “Journalists in the digital age — much like those that preceded them — must continue to ask the tough questions, report with empathy and compassion and continue to shine a light on uncomfortable topics” (St. Bonaventure University).
Journalism has never been as interactive or engaging as it is now, and I believe that journalism will continue to evolve, especially as digital technologies continue to advance.
